boston 2024 open space planning

The Boston 2024 Olympic bid proposed bold urban design and landscape strategies to bring new life to neighborhoods that need modern recreational facilities and vibrant open spaces. The core idea of the post-games transformation of event venues into dynamic, efficient, and flexible athletic and recreation spaces for the community was of paramount importance. At their most aspirational, each site aimed to be a park, one where athletic facilities and recreational components were embedded within the ethos of an open space that functioned as a central gathering point for celebration, camaraderie and public events. By eliminating unused residual spaces in the parks, existing recreational fields are restructured within a framework that added four soccer fields, three additional softball fields, a new skate park, tennis and basketball facilities, and a permanent track and field stadium.
