george mason university master plan

DumontJanks was honored to lead a collaboration with George Mason University on the development of a campus master plan. Mason is a complex university with over 37,000 students and an emphasis on student success in support of a diverse student body and its growing stature as a research institution.

The university has three primary campuses: the original flagship in Fairfax, an urban campus in Arlington, and a science and technology focused campus in Prince William County. The campus master plan addresses all three campuses and describes a new “lifestyle” for the university through the development of a strategic framework to support ongoing decision making. It explores scenarios to accommodate the anticipated continued increases in student enrollment and growth in Mason’s R1 research programs in a manner that maximizes the efficient use of Mason’s resources. Our work included significant campus engagement, an interactive online mapping survey, an investigation of the organization and carrying capacity of each campus, a detailed investigation of existing space utilization and potential space needs including synthesis of facility assessment data and requirements for research and STEM-based activities, and development of an online space migration tool. We followed work on the master plan with the development of a climate action plan, focusing on infrastructure and sustainability.

The George Mason University Masterplan received an Honorable Mention Award for Excellence in Planning for an Existing Campus at SCUP 2022.
