The Northwestern University framework plan supports academic excellence, vibrant student life, and strong campus identity. The major academic idea created stronger geographic connections between engineering, health sciences, and social sciences to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. Residential life development revitalized two traditional districts and created a new, upper-level community with strong ties into the neighborhood. The landscape plan draws upon two elements for inspiration: the city's street grid enables an intuitive, pedestrian-friendly structure, and a campus oak grove within the historic district provides the materials that unify the campus landscape. To accommodate growth, the plan looks for development opportunities that reinforce historic districts and respect neighborhood edges, and it integrates a new district along the lake. Given the campus' lake-front location, environmental stewardship was key.
