BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY CAMPUS ENTRY AND CIRCULATION STUDY

BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY CAMPUS ENTRY AND CIRCULATION STUDY

DUMONTJANKS was engaged by Brandeis University to lead a comprehensive Campus Entry and Circulation Study aimed at strengthening campus identity, clarifying mobility patterns, and enhancing the visitor arrival experience. The study focused on the South Street gateway, the campus loop road, and the Admissions Quadrangle—key areas that shape first impressions of the university. Work was informed by close collaboration and interviews with campus leadership and key stakeholders, including Campus Planning/Capital, Facilities Services, Student Affairs, Admissions, Public Safety, the President’s Office, and Communications/Marketing.

Through analysis of circulation systems, parking capacity, landscape character, and peer institutions, we developed two alternative scenarios to test implementation strategies. Scenario B was advanced as the preferred direction, offering a clearer framework to simplify vehicular movement, prioritize pedestrian experience, and reposition parking to strengthen campus hierarchy. Key interventions included restructuring the loop road, creating a more welcoming campus gateway, and transforming the Admissions Quadrangle from a parking-dominated space into a pedestrian-centered campus green.

The resulting phased framework improves safety, strengthens wayfinding, and reinforces Brandeis’s institutional image while maintaining operational flexibility. By integrating mobility, landscape, and spatial strategy, the study provides a clear roadmap for near- and long-term campus enhancements that elevate both campus life and public presence.
