Our framework for the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and academic medical center, focused on the creation of clinical expansion opportunities within a highly constrained urban setting and an extremely challenging regulatory environment while also enabling the longer-term creation of a true life sciences campus built around new models of active learning and a collaborative research environment. We aligned near-term facility investment with clinical priorities, including a new emergency department, new operating rooms with associated pre- and post- care units, and intensive care beds. Previous planning efforts could not accommodate this program given the physical constraints, but by considering an intriguing three-bay pavilion, we accommodated the program need, while also significantly improving green space, circulation, and sense of place. With respect to the learning and research missions, we explored a 21st century vision for a medical school and health science college centered on inter-professional training, simulation, and a patient-centered education. This transformative vision actually required less space than traditional methods.
