The Sacred Heart University master plan envisioned bold transformation and growth, transforming this former commuter school into a vibrant residential campus. Three initial projects created new buildings and powerful associated landscapes: the chapel and main quadrangle, the gallery student center, and the new school of business. The chapel places the spiritual heart of the campus at its geographic center, anchored by stunning outdoor spaces. Chapel, forecourt,cloister, and quadrangle are one. The chapel is strategically placed at the campus crossroads to encourage its use as the center of campus life. The quadrangle anchors the student experience, serving convocation and graduation ceremonies.The landscape design for the Chapel is meant to be open, inclusive and provide multiple opportunities for engagement and connectivity. The new open spaces associated with the chapel are simple, serene a direct extension of the building and at the same time integrated with the greater campus narrative. Traditional materials such as limestone, copper, concrete and wood are crafted to create sculptural and strong forms that complement the architecture.
